Can I go to Hazlet DMV without an appointment? ›

Starting Nov. 2, the Hazlet MVC - located at 1374 Route 36 in Airport Plaza - will operate under an appointment-only schedule. Other sites switching to appointment-only include Trenton, Manahawkin and Lakewood. All out-of-state transfers will be only available by appointment at all MVC Licensing Centers.

MVC In-Person

Walk-ins are only allowed for first time licenses/IDs/permits, name changes, and red decals at Licensing Centers. Other MVC transactions that can't be completed online require an appointment that customers need to schedule at NJMVC.gov.

If you are ineligible to renew online, you must make an appointment to renew your registration in person. Appointments are required. You can also re-register a vehicle in NJ via U.S. mail.

Applicants can go to realidnj.com and enter their zip code to see which available agency is closest to them and make an appointment.

Drivers can only obtain a Real ID license or identification card in person at a state Motor Vehicle Commission licensing center. The MVC doesn't accept walk-ins to get a Real ID license and an appointment is needed. Individuals without lawful status in the U.S. are not eligible to obtain a Real ID.

Scheduling an Appointment

Appointments at Licensing and Vehicle Centers must be scheduled at NJMVC.gov. Additional appointments are being added daily, overnight, and up to 60 days in advance.

Please visit the Bayonne, Rahway, South Plainfield or Edison agencies. Directions to these sites and additional agency locations are available on our website, www.njmvc.gov. Please be advised that, historically, the best times to visit an MVC agency are mid-week, mid-month.

Will REAL ID cost more than a Standard ID? Yes. The Standard NJ License/ID costs $24; REAL ID costs $35.

Registration renewal may be done in person, by mail, or via the internet.

Can I drive with expired registration in NJ? ›

A person driving with no registration is subject to a fine up to $100. Even if you follow all other traffic laws, a police officer can pull you over for driving without registration in New Jersey. Police officers also scan the license plates of parked cars, looking for registration violations.

Is everyone required to get a REAL ID? You are not required to get a REAL ID, however, starting May 7, 2025, if you typically use your driver license or non-driver ID (instead of a passport or other form of ID) to fly within the U.S. you probably want a REAL ID.

Unfortunately, you can't simply order it online or by phone — you must go in person to request a REAL ID, but if you schedule an appointment now you should have plenty of time before the deadline.

In order to obtain certain documents, like a standard driver license, or to verify changes to your driver record, you must prove your identity by passing the 6 Points of ID plus a Social Security number, ITIN, or affidavit. You must also provide proof of your address and that you are a New Jersey resident.

Every driver license office has also added walk-in capacity and now serves only walk-ins on weekday afternoons. You can even view current estimated walk-in wait times online.
